I’ve often raved about Berlinde‘s art on here - in fact, her work even invades my everyday life as arty backdrop - so I’ll spare you the superlatives but instead just want to make you aware that if you’re Melbourne-based, you now have less than a week left to catch her fascinating We Are All Flesh show at the ACCA.
In case you were wondering: Yes, Berlinde did have a show with the same title three years ago at Hauser & Wirth in London but it seems that different and lots of newly commissioned works are on display in Melbourne.
If you’re not yet familiar with her work, the 15-minute interview below offers a great introduction into her vision, process and technique but of course will neither replace the olfactory, visceral and epidermic qualities of the wax, skin, hair and fabrics she uses for her sculptures, nor explain the necrophiliac alchemistic ways in which she can turn branches into limbs, tree trunks into fresh corpses by masterfully applying an organic colour palette (pinks for skin, off-white for adipose tissue, greys/greens/blues for the circulatory system) onto wax with which she can control, halt and synthesise transformation, decay, death.
If you’re not in Australia but in.. who knows.. Turkey, you can also catch her Wound show at the ARTER Space for Art in Istanbul until August 26 where she has inspired Vincent Dunoyer to dance Bruyckeresque choreographies in the exhibition space surrounded by her sculptures.

I don’t think I ever had a) an exhibition announcement for Overland Park, Kansas and b) so little information on a show as there seems to be neither preview nor press release for Allison Schulnik‘s Nerman Museum show so I guess it’s just an uhmm.. exhibition of Allison Schulnik‘s video work? Yay. ¬_¬
From the three images on the museum website, all I can gather is that more recent works will be on show as the pictures are all stills from her Mound video that the museum recently acquired and which you can see below.
So if you’re planning to check it out, do share your impressions so I can update this post.

Director/writer team Gisèle Vienne and Dennis Cooper have been working as a pair on theatre projects since 2004 and are now presenting a series of haunting productions, puppets and portraits at the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
Their show Teenage Hallucination evokes uncanny memories of the Chapman Brothers‘ army of creepy mutant girls (particularly the brothers’ recent hybrid girl army with THEY TEACH US NOTHING swastika hoodies).
However, Gisèle‘s Olimpias are a lot less grotesque and hyperreal than the Chapman‘s creations but more cracked and broken in their appearance and there’s a subtle sense of mutilated and traumatised individuality in her adolescents’ intimidated stares and serious outfits.
39 dolls will be on show as an installation accompanied by a beautifully shot photographic documentation of Gisèle‘s work with and on them.
Also on show will be Gisèle‘s and Dennis‘ newest theatrical piece which was produced in collaboration with Stephen O’Malley of SunnO))) fame (working on sound as well as wall drawing designs) entitled Last Spring: A Prequel (a trailer has not emerged yet, sadly, but will be added to this post later).
But that’s still not all because Teenage Hallucination is part of a festival at the Centre Pompidou that’s packed with talks, presentations and screenings with other artists, filmmakers and authors and this coming Sunday promises to be particularly interesting/provoking with a presentation of Peter Sotos’ Mine Kept and Pierre Dourthe (Hans Bellmer author) discussing The Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death.
The full programme of festival events is here. It’s quite intense if not slightly insane. Teenage Hallucination itself has opened tonight and will remain on view until March 12. Further details below.

Please excuse the lack of updates in the recent past, gentle reader. It’s due to very bad internet access that pretty much only allows me to update my Facebook with the usual award-winning and highly offensive daily dose of anti-information.
Anyways, because this is an oh-so special time of consumerist rubbishness, I decided that I should really annoy you and your family with some very obnoxious LOLmas videos for absolutely no reason.
Featuring an awesome Jewish kid, a very disappointed non-Jewish kid, Heino, as well as Irish and 3D creepiness. Thanks to PoE for the inspiration and beautiful and very talented Suzanne Walsh for the Moving Crib video from her homeland.
Oh, and if you made it this far without an intracerebral hemorrhage, I suggest you now lock yourself in a pitch-black room with this video projected onto all four walls. Then swallow the key.

Matsui Fuyuko. Insanely talented, bright, stunningly beautiful. And modest. There’s more than enough reasons to worship this artist but for me personally, it’s the fact that she wrote her doctoral dissertation on The Inescapable Awakening to Pain, through Visual Perception via the Sensory Nerves. *bites lips*
If you don’t want to take my word for it but convince yourself of her many talents, please watch this footage of her working on Carved Limbs on an Altar over here on YouTube (sadly, embedding has been disabled).
I must say it’s an absolute mystery to me why she’s not as big in the occidental art world as back in Japan but it seems that enthusiasm for her work is slowly growing and as every so often, it’s French galleries and publishing houses leading the way. And anyways, it’s not like art appreciation in the West in this apathetic and ironic century still has ANYTHING whatsoever to do with technique, ingenuity, originality, imagination or vision. Sometimes it actually seems like it’s the very opposite that’s in demand.
Anyways, back to Matsui Fuyuko: First of all, Gallery Naruyama in Tokyo in conjunction with Galerie DA-END in Paris has released a beautiful signed and limited edition box sets of Matsui‘s oeuvre containing 20 of her artworks, including the very popular Nyctalopia and Keeping Up the Pureness (above). It can be pre-ordered from Naruyama for JPY 46,000. There’s also a “KIRI” special deluxe set in an edition of 45 only which includes an engraving of the gorgeous Rough Draft for Virgin Specimen (2009, bottom) for JPY 480,000. And before you go “Uh, that’s very pricey. Bitch!” think about what sums the likes of Mark Ryden sell BOOKS full of repetitive iconography for these days. Also check the edition size on that. Exactly. I rest my case.
And in other brilliant news, Matsui Fuyuko will have an exhibition entitled Becoming Friends with All the Children in the World which opens later this month at Yokohama Museum of Art and will remain on view until March 2012. I know it sounds like a Michael Jackson manifesto, but I’m somehow sure that’s not what it’s about at all. More details about the show below.

Just a quick heads up for Londoners that great things will be taking place at the Horse Hospital in Bloomsbury these coming weeks:
From December 1 – 4, the London Underground Film Festival takes place, this year featuring lots of live acts, DJs, an exhibition of Emily Rose England‘s work and great movies such as THUNDERCRACK! presented by the amazing people of Today Is Boring. Check out the full programme here.
And the day before the LUFF starts, you have a chance to see a screening of Of Dolls & Murder the documentary about the fantastic forensic Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death dioramas – I posted about them back in.. Christ.. 2004!

Nagi Noda, 1973 – 2008
Nagi Noda – the incredibly talented multi-genre artist, director, designer, fashion and hair visionary who died in the prime of her creative career three years ago is finally being honoured with a retrospective of her astonishingly diverse work in Tokyo, where she lived and worked.
Creation Gallery will be showing lots of previously unseen works and certainly some of her well-known animal haircuts/hats, superb photographs and some of her fantastically imaginative videos like Mariko Takahashi’s Poodle Fitness Video which beyond doubt influenced such
annoying obnoxious OKAY OKAY kinda cute things as this.
So if you’re in Tokyo, do go down to Creation Gallery to celebrate the short sweet life and jubliant work of this stellar woman.
