And with this, I’m off to an early bed – trying to get better… oh, no, wait! The IT Crowd and QI are on. At the same time! My brain will explode in lovely shades of pink! Weeeeeeeeeeeee!

James Jean‘s work space – click for details/larger view
Before you ask (not that you were going to – no-one ever asks me anything here anymore.. pffft!):
Yes, it’s my day off, yes, I have no life, no friends, no proper food, no money to go anywhere, a head cold sneaking in and yes, I’ll be therefore clogging up your feed readers with nonsensical blog and forum posts aaaaaall day long until the internet dies. So there.
Anyway, so next up is a book signing announcement for James Jean‘s fabulous Fables collection & XOXO postcard book at Gallery Nucleus, Alhambra.
Free refreshments will be provided because (unless you’re British) there’s nothing as exhausting as queuing. All further details below.
My own (signed.. weeeee!) copy arrived the other day (thanks, James!) – together with an adorable print and a stunning (signed.. weeeee!) postcard book – and what can I say?! James’ work is glorious and worth at least twelfty times its price tag. Makes a lovely Christmas gift for your loved ones (or yourself if they’re all dead).

The Drawing Room at ThinkSpace: Final Days!
by Suzanne on November 28th, 2008

Haunted #11 by Joao Ruas, pencil and watercolour on 200gr watercolour paper – click for details/larger view
I’m not sure why I always end up liking male artists exhibiting at women-dominated group shows best, but I’m afraid I can’t help myself and it seems that out of all the 25 artists presented at The Drawing Room, monsieur Joao Ruas‘ oeuvre (see above) has definitely left the biggest impression on me.
Maybe it’s his JamesJeanJeremyEnecioesque rendering or maybe I just like people with reddened nose tips and belly button body mods (see small image below). I dunno.

Evolution (The Dirty Land II) by Brian M. Viveros, graphite, watercolour & airbrush on handmade archival paper – click for details/larger view
I do know, however, that despite fighting it, I’m also still very much in love with Brian Viveros’ airbrushed charcoal textures, even though the chain smoking really gets on my nerves these days. I understand that Nicorette® pacifiers are way less aesthetically pleasing, but I really wish his characters would finally decide to quit or at least move on to another, less predictable addiction. Thank you.
Anyway, in case you haven’t heard of it a thousand times on a thousand art blogs yet: The Drawing Room - curated by Audrey Kawasaki - features the work of 25 talented young artists and will close its doors this Saturday, November 29, 2008.

Kris Kuksi & Pat Rocha at Joshua Liner, NYC
by Suzanne on November 21st, 2008

The Guardian by Kris Kuksi, 2008, mixed media assemblage – click for details/larger view
Kris Kuksi‘s - previously featured here - passionately awaited Imminent Utopia show will go on display at Joshua Liner Gallery tomorrow evening bringing you twisted gothic architecture on a microcosmic scale.
The exhibition will feature eleven (!) of Kuksi‘s insanely detailed, demonic assemblage pieces.
As the show title suggests, Kuksi‘s grandiose Imminent Utopia sculpture will form the centrepiece of the exhibition. Must. See.
Simultaneously on show are the works of Pat Rocha – highly plastic stills from a collective unconscious mid-20th-century past, painted in deeply complex, Eric Whitesque, semi-translucent layers of oils. Pat’s Departure show is highly, highly recommended as well!
Opening reception: Saturday, November 22, 2008, 6 – 9 PM

Doc, you’d better back up!
by Suzanne on November 21st, 2008
Once again, David Malki has gone completely, ingeniously mad with caricaturistic power and created a few delightful variations on one of my favourite movie themes ever.
But see for yourself:

Stephan Doitschinoff at Jonathan LeVine, NYC

Medusa by Stephan Doitschinoff (a.k.a. Calma), acrylic on canvas – click for details/larger view
Cryptoreligious Brazilian alchemist Stephan Doitschinoff (a.k.a. Calma, short for “con alma” (lat.) meaning “with soul”) presents new work in an upcoming solo show entitled Novo Mundo opening at the venerable Jonathan LeVine Gallery in NYC tomorrow evening.
A beautifully designed book published by the ever amazing Gestalten - who also kindly posted an interview with Calma - accompanies the exhibition and Stephan will be signing copies of this new monograph shortly before tomorrow’s reception, between 6 – 7 PM.
Religious iconography has never been so much haptic fun and I’ll promptly sit down to write a letter to the Holy See and ask them to let Calma redecorate the Vatican!

Andrew Foster at Robert Berman Gallery, Santa Monica
by Suzanne on November 16th, 2008

Blue Girl with the Striped Blue Scarf by Andrew Foster, oil on linen over panel, 2008 – click for details/larger view
I love Andrew Foster‘s art for many reasons, but mostly because of his bizarre obsession with piled girls in underwear. And socks! They’re a quintessential ingredient of the Fosteresque bildsprache.
If you too like socks and/or girls on piles, go see his Deep Thoughts solo show which opened at Robert Berman Gallery in Santa Monica the other day. It will remain on display until December 6.
All further details after this voluptuous flesh pyramid.
