BrowserTod®: The GIF Art of Francoise Gamma & Co.

Fracturas by Francoise Gamma - BEWARE: Website very image heavy

A friend of mine recently raised the issue of image formats that are not futureproof and said that he wants to see animated GIFs extinct by 2020.

Animated GIFs - bitmaps in general, for that matter - are a topic I feel strongly about and as long as there are artists like the wunderkind Uno Moralez (previously featured here), the office supply addicts of I Am Not An Artist, the cinemaphile Three Frames, the slightly OCD people from SweetGIFs or the hilarious b3ta collective out there who use animated GIFs to enrich the internets with creative, subversive, humorous content that would simply not work in any other medium, the animated GIF deserves our attention and protection.

Someone who devotes more time than any other artist to the animated GIF is Francoise Gamma (top) whose transsexual Bellmeresque zombiedroids need to be viewed with an advanced browser if you don't want it to crash.

And don't say I didn't warn you.

Cause I did.

There used to be some goodness at http://www.theanimatedgifappreciationsociety.com/. The name has resurfaced on tumblr, not sure if it's the same people though.
