Erwin Olaf's "Grief" at Magda Danysz, Paris: Final Days

Victoria - Portrait by Erwin Olaf, 2007

With his new photographic series entitled Grief, Amsterdam-based Erwin Olaf manages to make depression and mourning look like a line of sleek self-assembly emotions called SORGSEN stocked at your local IKEA where Tyler Brûlé likes to hang out on weekends.

For this third installment of a trilogy of melancholy and enigmatic photographs, Olaf tried to bring the ennui and sterility of American 1960s middle-class households back into our collective memories.

Grief shows what would happen if you pressure cleaned Gregory Crewdson's dramatic interiors off all their tragedy and horror and - maybe like no other of his exhibitions before - reveals Olaf's journalistic origin and documentary background (he studied journalism in Utrecht).

The artist himself says about his recent project:

"Grief is a series about the choreography of emotion, and what you can create in the studio."

The previous two series (Rain and Hope) can both be inspected at Olaf's redesigned website (... which now allows you to zoom. Weeeee!).

I adore it too! Sadly, I've never seen his work in person, so I'm very very grateful to him for adding the Zoooooomification of Dooooom! 'Tis where the future lies.
