Spreading fear and mayhem in the visual arts.

Scott Musgrove has some lovely progress pictures of his new bronze sculptures over on his blog.

Also, if any of you doesn’t have his Accidental Taxidermist book yet, get it! Even my armadillo likes it - and he normally only reads Kafka and Strindberg. Observe:

Femke Hiemstra & A Whole Lot of Eye Candy at CoproNason, Santa Monica

by Suzanne on April 5th, 2009

Glamour Cat by Scott Musgrove, oil on board

Excellence in pop-surrealist eye candy can always be expected from the people behind Hi-Fructose and CoproNason Gallery, but I think they have outdone themselves yet again.

Overdose has just gone on show and features the works of such glorious artists as Alex Pardee, Brendan Danielsson, Chris Peters, Chet Zar, Chris Scarborough, Dan Quintana, Eric Fortune, Jason D'Aquino, Josh Keyes, Kris Kuksi (see image below), Kukula, Martin Wittfooth, Michael Page, Scott Musgrove (see image top), Travis Louie, Yosuke Ueno, Yoko d'Holdbachie to actually only name a few..

The Recreation by Kris Kuksi, mixed media assemblage

Sorry for the long absence - too much to post about and way too little time. And I'm afraid it will stay that way for the time being until things/life gets a bit less stressful.

Scott Musgrove in Culver City: Final Days!

by Suzanne on June 1st, 2008

Booted Glamour Cat by Scott Musgrove, oil on board

Hmm... judging by yesterday's post, it almost seems to me that stripping cartoonish creatures down to their bones (c.f. images above and below) is THE art flavour of the month. After all, skulls are so 2007 and, let's face it, aliens, particularly Martians - now that they've even invaded the Barbican - have been a little passé and tacky ever since Erich von Däniken decided unanimously that he's in fact a scientific author. Yeah, right.

All the better for us that self-proclaimed "natural alchemist" Scott Musgrove keeps enriching our imaginary worlds with his ever so endearing "accidental organisms" - as he refers to them.

For his current exhibition at Billy Shire in Culver City, he even seems to have finally discovered his indisputable talent as a 3D artist and presents a set of wooden sculptures alongside his iconic beastly paintings.

Moreover, he and Mike Leavitt (of Art Army fame) have collaborated in building an adorable mixed media diorama thingie.

My favourite work, however, is this painting of a seemingly melancholy inflatable monster deliberately floating low in order to have its belly pleasantly tickled by tree tops. Awwww!

In other news, I keep seeing giant minotauresque faces in the Edwardian black walnut desk I write from. Very much like this one here. Is that common?
