Places To Scatter Your Ashes III

by suzanne_tumblr on November 29th, 2009

Another artwork that totally gets the severity of mountain winter is the breath-taking Bourbaki Panorama by Edouard Castres in my sweet little hometown of Luzern.

I’ve never seen a better translation of the time- and spacelessness of deep, deep mountain winter and the impossible optical simultaneity of dusk and dawn that can make you lose your mind if you don’t stick your head in the snow every now and again.

Anyway, go see this panorama when you’re in central Switzerland. You won’t regret it. It will leave a lasting chill in your old bones.

Beautiful. I couldn’t help being reminded of one of my favourite Swiss-Italian paintings: Le Cattive Madri by Giovanni Segantini, 1894:

I find it somewhat upsetting to talk to non-mountain folks about this painting since it seems that they never share my passion for it, for the way the light hits the mountains of the Savognin and how this (painted!) light gives you an immediate sensation of the precise temperature and the extreme silence that reigned supreme there and then, so anyways, I stopped talking about it altogether.

It’s too epic for words anyways.

This info graphic shows very elaborately and in great detail why I failed at becoming a world-famous pianist.

Every gallery worker knows that the framing can make or break an artwork, particularly when the frame is 4/5 of the ensemble. This piece gets a 10 out of 10 and I wish I could jump right into it. o_O
