Vivian Girl Princesses Are Forced to Witness Frightful Murder Massacre of Children by Henry Darger - click to enlarge

America's outsider art darling Henry Darger currently has a retrospective devoted to him in the country that has always loved and understood him most, Japan.

Harajuku's Laforet Museum is showing American Innocent - In the Realms of the Unreal for another week.

The title is a reference to Darger's 15,143-page fantasy manuscript entitled The Story of the Vivian Girls, in What is Known as the Realms of the Unreal, of the Glandeco-Angelinnian War Storm, Caused by the Child Slave Rebellion (yes, I've long been waiting for a chance to write this out just to piss you off!) and to the 2004 documentary portrait about his life and work of the same name:

On show: April 23 - May 15, 2011

Venue: Laforet Museum, Harajuku, Tokyo, Japan, tel: 03-3475-0411

Gallery hours: 11 AM - 8 PM

it was breathtaking! - very impressive - his colours and compositions are amazing for someone so artistically "inept" - the scale of the works also surprising - displayed so you could see the paintings on both sides of the "pages" - tons of visitors (even early in the day when i hoped it'd be empty)

I'm glad you enjoyed it and I love it when they display both recto and verso as versos often contain so much information. The Wellcome Collection here always do that with important documents.

I'm sorry about the tons of visitors - that's mainly because they all read my blog. (,_,)
