Spreading fear and mayhem in the visual arts.

Tacheles

Posted in Interna by Suzanne on May 18th, 2006 | BBC Wikipedia

I've been pretty frustrated about this blog/website and the work I put into it for quite some time now.

I'm aware that I had such phases before and that they're only natural for an unprofessional blogger, but I fear I've reached a new low point with the opening of Thee Shoppe that I was so enthusiastic about.

Here's what makes me sad furious: Up to this point, I got over three dozen readers (sic!) emailing me to ask whether I get a commission for selling prints and only a handful of actual print orders. I'm sorry to say that I fail to understand the implication of such questions. No, I don't get a commission even though I'm broke as fuck - I do this because I'm convinced that some of my friends are very talented artists who deserve a wider audience.

I'm not writing these lines to hear encouraging words from any of you - I'm only writing to tell you that I need to think things through.

Don't expect me back before Ascension Day.

Yours,

Suzanne

Suzanne you may not want encouraging words but that's all I have to offer. Get bent, pause and get back into it when the bug bites. We poor folk would love to be supportive of said shop buttttttt *sigh*. You are one of the twistedly best things on the web.

For those of us who long for the days of Salons, a place for artists to sing for their supper and be charmed by the wit and grace of their hostess... this is the only place in the blogland sector of the psychosphere that is worth taking the time...always. You have created something that is unique and valuable, a place to share images and ideas which is both precise and vast in it's scope.

I'm sorry, Suzanne, that you're been disillusioned by the lack of response, thus far, to thee shoppe. One sullied part of being an artist is the realization that art is so peculiarly particular, that finding clients is a bloody nightmare. Finding clients is like trying to find Mr. Right...again and again and again...

Most artists question, at some point, why they devote so much love and blood if no one, or few, are buying. Maybe the answer is that they don't really have a choice in the matter. They know in their gut that they care too much to stop. As the good witch said in Wild at Heart..."If you are truly wild at heart, you'll fight for your dreams... Don't turn away from love, Sailor..." Don't turn away from supporting the arts, Suzanne...we artists love you.

    Suzanne,

I don't mean to sound patronizing, so excuse me if I do.

We don't blog for reward. We blog because we believe. It's a hard road. Few understand.

If you blog for one reader your effort is rewarded.

Even if you blog for yourself.

Who can tell the eventual value of such things? For my own part, I believe there is no greater artisitc effort. To make because you believe, not because it is expected or rewarded.

In my experience there are always those who appreciate the effort, and they are the only ones I care about.

    Kisses.

    xx

I fear you misunderstood my intention behind that post. I'm definitely not a person who blogs to get more attention/recognition and that's not what I complained about. From my experience with print journalism, I've learned that you can never be a good writer when the only thing you care about is to increase your readership. The thing is, unlike blogging, trying to run a shop that makes both artists and buyers happy needs more than this one person "who appreciates the effort".

No good deed goes unpunished. One does blogs for oneself and if others come along that is a mixed blessing, but nonetheless, a blessing.

Selling stuff is very, very hard. The faint hearted give up quick.

By the way, what on earth is Ascension Day or why does it matter?

yeah , way to go girl , put your agression out there , see what a response you get , now that is marketing , doing bizniz aint easy , especially when your clientele has no money either ( wanna trade bankaccount? ) grab a book of deep anal marketing penetration , it is the only way to the yankeedollah. seen a pile of great sites going down the tube out of agression and frustration.
you spend hours and energy into the artists you completely digg , same chair , same problem , selling art on the web is horrific , ask around , try to get a hold of a few square feet of room smack in the centre of the city , go in elbow deep at the artfunds en subsidies , you are bigger then you realise , step up , shout and kick ass.You have a mighty fine restaurant with a excellent chef cook , now the place needs a realistic entrance, and yes would looove to eat there and even prepared to save money to go there.
If you need help , a shoulder to cry on to , or just wanna spit in me face, mail me.
Pardonnez my language , I always type way to much and not always clever.
since there is no preview , hoppa.

You seem to mix up frustration with aggression. I'm not an aggressive person. Also, "marketing" is not a word that's in my vocabulary and if you seriously think that I posted this with a subliminal message to the readers to buy prints, you've read too much of Freud's "Psychopathologie des Alltagslebens". I wrote these lines because I felt down. I'm an impulsive person.

Yeah. Charge commission. Because people will think you'll do anyway - and buy yourself a finca on some Spanish island. In the end there is nothing wrong with commissions, only people who still live at home wave the flag of "live by love, air & art".

I adore your site since I don't know when. And as I know from running my own site - it's always ups and downs. Endulge in the downs, but remember the message is: Immer weitermachen!

    Hugs.

For what it may be worth, I'm yet another 'if I only had some spare cash, Starving artist syndrome donchaknow, HAW HAW' people, but I actually mean it! - once I get a job (I'm trying and trying! what a gruelling procedure) I WILL buy art from here. So there. (assuming shipping and stuff is all ok)
There are squillions of things I wanna get off the web but art from here is the #1 priority. Even more than thinkgeek stuff. and that's saying something.

I sorta know what this frustration's like, too - I tentatively put some pictures up for sale on Deviantart and haven't sold a single print. Normally this isn't unusual, deviantart is a massive store where the already extremely popular art gets all the advertising, and the rest gets zilch.
But one picture of mine has been added to nearly 700 peoples' favourites, and they're all on plenty of people's wishlists.... but noone actually likes any of them enough to -buy- something!
They like it plenty on their screen, but they seem to prefer regular ol' eye-candy (flowers, macro photos of dewdrops on feathers etc) for their walls, by far :(
